What's Your Profile?

I have always been a little sceptical of many of the personal analysis tools such as the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument, Belbin and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - but wrongly, as I found out last week.

I have a client who insisted on "winning me over" by using me as an example.  I'm glad he did because all my doubts about my abilities and the way I approach things have vanished.  For example I now have an explanation about why I tend to be an impulsive communicator rather than considering everything I say first – it’s because I (for better or worse) tend to leap to conclusions, whereas other people build their thoughts logically a step at a time.

I found it very comforting to discover that I am the way I am for a reason.  It’s not that I am either right or wrong or good or bad, it’s simply that we are all different, and the contribution I can make to my family and the people I work with is different from that of others.

Being able to analyse the different ways in which people think and view the world is also a big benefit when assembling teams or thinking about who to involve in solving a problem.  Assembling a team of complementary individuals will ensure that they have creative ideas, a good team process and the ability to make things happen with the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed.

I began as a sceptic but now I thoroughly recommend it and will start using some of these tools with my clients.
